Rhode Island District Wellness PolicIes

Picture
Any local education agency (LEA) participating in the National School Lunch/Breakfast Program, including all 36 RI public school districts, must develop and implement a wellness policy as established by the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 and by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA). (See Laws & Regulations) Districts are required to make public their district wellness policy and invite stakeholders (parents, students, PE teachers, school nurses, administrators, school committee members, food service workers, classroom teachers, and members of the public) into the development, implementation, and review of the local wellness policy.

Learn about the district wellness policy and find out how the schools are implementing its guidelines and goals. Better yet, ask about the district wellness committee (required by RI law) and attend a meeting to see how you can get involved.
